attached to the hospital. Health education is a regular activity. School children are trained so that they can identify early signs of leprosy and refer the people to us. The students have been very enthusiastic, and thus function as effective community volunteers, contributing towards the goal of elimination of leprosy. The deformity rate which was 26.5% in 1986 is now down to 3.54%. Rate of detection of new cases which was 15 per 10,000 population in 1986 is now 6.06 per 10,000 population.

Continue to function as a referral center, which will be all the more important after the integration of leprosy with the general health services. To achieve reduction in the number of leprosy cases in the old Hubli and Anandnagar areas, similar to what has been achieved in the rural areas of Hubli and Dharwar taluks. There are a large number of cured leprosy patients with deformities of the hands and feet which can be corrected by surgery. To launch special drive in co-operation with the government to identify these patients and take them up for surgery.
Train community volunteers to diagnose leprosy patches so that they can continue to direct the patients to the health services and will be an important link in the health system.

Starting services for AIDS, so that the experience and skills gained over the years can be put to good use.Become a center for providing comprehensive preventive and curative care in all health matters and function as a “ family health center”.Upgrade the skills of medical professionals in providing care for leprosy by continued trainig programmes.
For the past 25 years we have been financially supported by Swiss-Emmaus. However, over the years the funds are declining for various reasons – passing away of the older generation, the younger generation preferring to donate for other causes like AIDS or people affected by natural disaster, the misunderstanding that leprosy is eliminated.Though leprosy has reduced, we still detect on an average 140 new cases every year through intensive efforts, thus preventing development of deformities. The Government has a vision of making leprosy an integral part of the general health services so that it no longer remains an isolated, feared disease. We have always worked in close cooperation with the Government and enjoys a good rapport with them.
In keeping with the vision of the government, and recognizing the fact that the existing leprosy cases have now reduced to a considerable extent, we are now initiating general health services. We wish to continue to the tradition of providing excellent services to the best of our ability and whatever our area of work is. In doing all this, we would also like to see that leprosy does not get neglected.
The hospital is situated in green, serene surroundings, far from the madding crowd of the city, and stands out like an oasis. This has an additive effect to the medicines on the recovery of the patients. We have a team of dedicated nurses who provide gentle human care to the patients. The cleanliness of the hospital has been appreciate by many visitors. The hospital has an excellent reputation in appropriate use of funds and maintenance of records.
